Title

Contrasts in urban redevelopment: catastrophic and gradualistic approaches

Abstract

This paper considers two approaches to urban renewal. Renewal is prompted by the obsolescence-structural, functional, economic or other - of the urban environment. Renewal is usually gradual, occurring plot-by-plot. In some circumstances, after disaster or war, or where there is a single powerful landholder, renewal may occur in large-scale, catastrophic form, affecting wide areas. The effects of the two types of renewal on the urban landscape are quite different. Examples are given for Britain ranging from the rebuilding of London after 1666 to the present day.
