Title

Gradual urban renewal in English residential areas

Abstract

This paper discusses gradual urban renewal - a continuous process that has received far less attention than large-scale renewal - using examples from English suburban residential areas. The extent of gradual renewal over some 28 years is shown, and this differs between in Midland region and the South East where pressure for increased residential density is greater. The most significant cause of this form of renewal is economic, where a family reassesses its needs of a plot and sells or subdivides it for financial gain.
